The temple was founded in 1604 (Keicho 9) by Nichitatsu of Shinoin, the 16th chief priest of Gyokusen Myohokke-ji Temple. When Tokugawa Ieyasu entered Edo, Nichitatsu accompanied him, bringing with him the sacred image of Marishiten, which Ieyasu deeply revered. In April 1688 (Tenwa 8), the temple received its land near the Kanda embankment.
Although it was damaged by fire in 1772 (An’ei 1) and subsequently rebuilt, the temple was struck by the Great Fire of Edo in 1864 (Genji 1), prompting its relocation to its current site. Today, within the temple grounds, near a large camphor tree, lies the grave of Takahashi Deishu, one of the three renowned Bakumatsu swordsmen.
